Phuti Khomo is excited about being back on the small screen. She plays Sharon on One Magic’s Entangled. Sharon is a woman who is career-driven, comes from a well-off family, loves love, and to be loved. She is in an entanglement with her partner’s business partner who she had a one-night stand with.
After leaving Muvhango, she focused on her businesses but now they are running full steam and she can again give her time to one of her favourite things - acting.
Speaking to a local magazine, Phuti says she was busy running her business, wearing caps, and overall ensuring everything is running smoothly in her construction business when she got a call to audition for the role.
“I asked about the role and told them I am not going to audition until they tell me more about the role. They called me for a lead role so they spoke to me, and the lady told me how the production house is forward-thinking and is trying something new with this production. When they briefly told me about the role, I was happy because I always wanted to be part of this kind of production. I am always about breaking new grounds and doing new things, I don’t like doing the norm,” she says.
The former Muvhango actress says she didn’t have a script when she did her first audition.
“They gave me a description and the people at my office helped me with this audition, then I sent it through to them. They called me to audition in person. When I auditioned in person and saw the people behind this production and their vision for the show, I started wanting this role so bad, I prayed for it and once I channeled myself into that space of working to get it, I knew that I will get this role.”
She says it is about time South Africa starts producing such content, which normally bought from overseas because the actors are ready.
“We are cable of producing shows like Insecure and Being Mary Jane, for example, because we also experience these things. And that is why I can be Sharon because it is either you were once in Sharon’s shoes or know someone who is going through exactly what Sharon is experiencing.
"We have beautiful stories that need to be on TV instead of trying to box actors into certain roles. We have access to overseas shows and they have been part of our lives forever. It is time we start producing these shows because people resonate with these stories, they see themselves through such characters, and it is much relatable if we also play these characters,” Phuti says.
She says it was a joy to be on set because everyone understood the assignment and put their best feet forward. The chemistry she has with her fellow actors also pushes her to be on her A-game she says.
Coming back in the game has inspired Phuti to think creatively and work on her own production.
“I can’t say much yet but I am currently working on a production that I will act first to give it a direction, and then focus on producing once it is good to go. Keep your ears on the ground,” Phuti says.
